SUNOCO TO HOST BRIDESBURG COMMUNITY PRIDE DAY
SATURDAY OCTOBER 11

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 11, 2003—Sunoco, Inc.’s Frankford Plant located in the Bridesburg section of Philadelphia will host Bridesburg Community Pride Day on Saturday, October 11 from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Activities will be held at the Bridesburg Recreation Center, located at 4601 Richmond Street, and include an awards presentation for Best House, Best Block, essay contest, art contest and announcement of the Pride Week logo design winner at 1 p.m.  There will also be community and game booths, basketball games, pony rides, face painting, velcro drag racing and rock climbing. There will be a variety of food and beverages available. A disc jockey and the Aqua String Band will be playing for the crowd.

Directly following the awards presentation, Mayor John Street will participate in a celebratory signing of the City Council Ordinance authorizing the City to acquire portions of the Kensington & Tacony rail track along the Delaware Riverfront from Conrail for use as the first segment of a riverfront bike trail. Organizers for the event are awaiting confirmation that Governor Ed Rendell may also join the presentation.

The United Veterans will sponsor a closing breakfast on Sunday, October 12 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the American Legion Post 821 at 4404 Salmon Street. In conclusion of the Bridesburg Pride Week activities the Bridesburg United Methodist Church on 2717-19 Kirkbride Street will host the afternoon closing services on Sunday at 2 p.m. Services will include musical selections by a soloist and an award presentation for "Outstanding Service to Bridesburg." Refreshments will be served.

Community Pride Day and the closing breakfast are the culmination of a week of activities that started with Clean Up Day on October 4 and a Polish Pride Parade on October 5 on the Ben Franklin Parkway in downtown Philadelphia. On October 6, the Bridesburg Historical Society held a gathering at the Historical Society Building, featuring more than 100 photographs and memorabilia depicting the local history of Bridesburg.
