SUNOCO CHEMICALS ANNOUNCES MOTHBALL OF
PHENOL 1 LINE AT HAVERHILL OHIO PLANT

PHILADELPHIA, November 18, 2003 - Sunoco Chemicals announced today that, effective immediately, it will mothball the phenol 1 line at its Haverhill, Ohio production facility.  No other units are affected by this action.

Sunoco Chemicals decided to mothball the phenol 1 line in order to idle its most inefficient production capacity, allowing the company to maximize production at the two remaining phenol lines at Haverhill and its two lines at its Frankford site.   With the implementation of improved energy sourcing and a new phenol technology, Sunoco facilities will continue to drive to best in class in cost in the industry.   Sunoco plans to retrofit line 1 at Haverhill and restart it when the market requires capacity.  In addition, the remaining lines at Haverhill and Frankford have cost effective expansion capability.

Sunoco Chemicals will remain the largest producer of phenol in North America with two plants, one in Haverhill, Ohio, and the other in the Frankford section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with combined phenol annual capacity of 1.8 billion pounds.  The phenol 1 line at Haverhill was built in 1969.
