SUNOCO CHEMICALS ANNOUNCES
ANILINE/DPA PLANT CLOSURE

PHILADELPHIA, December 2, 2002 - Sunoco Chemicals said today that it announced the idling of its aniline and diphenylamine (DPA) production facility at the Haverhill, Ohio plant effective immediately. No other units are affected by this decision.

A significant mechanical problem had been uncovered during a recent inspection of the unit. The return on the business does not justify the capital cost to bring the plant back to a safe, reliable, operating condition at this time. The aniline and DPA unit was built in 1982 with a rated a capacity of 140 million pounds and is the only facility in North America, which produces aniline from phenol.

The decision to idle this facility will allow Sunoco Chemicals to focus its resources on phenol and bisphenol-A production at the Haverhill plant. Sunoco Chemicals is the largest producer of phenol in North America with two plants, one in Haverhill, Ohio, and the other in the Frankford section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with combined capacity of 2.1 billion pounds.
