What is Phenol?

Phenol is a solid white, crystalline, organic chemical derived from the basic raw materials of benzene and propylene. In turn, these materials are used to produce the feedstock for phenol – cumene.

Phenol is a vital raw material in the production of high-impact phenolic resins – used in plywood or oriented-strandboard (OSB) adhesives for the construction, transportation and other industries. Phenol is also a component of nylon, pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals. It is also used as a feedstock for two other Sunoco products – bisphenol A (for epoxy and polycarbonate resins, used in compact discs, appliance parts and automotive coatings), and aniline.

Manufacturing Information

Phenol is produced at Sunoco’s Frankford (Philadelphia, PA) and Haverhill, OH plants. It is transported by rail car, barges and trucks.
